MICROMINE in the middle of Tarkwa

MICROMINE Africa recently implemented a 20 seat Micromine academic network license at the Mining Engineering Department for the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) in Tarkwa, Ghana. The institution is also known as the George Grant University of Mines and Technology. The Micromine 2018 license forms part of our Academic License Scheme, which has been introduced in over 115 academic institutions worldwide and continues to expand its reach.

The program was developed to provide the support and resources necessary for students and lecturers to gain experience in a 3D geological and mine modelling software, preparing students for what will be expected of them in the working environment and providing lecturers with the ability to deliver course material more effectively.

As part of the Academic License Scheme, the necessary support and training is provided by MICROMINE Africa to the academic institutions to make sure they can fully utilize the software and make sure they can deliver courses to the best of their abilities. Getting to these institutions is particularly difficult in Africa, as there is a considerable amount of travel involved to get there. Kayleigh Cooper, MICROMINE Africa’s training and support consultant for Micromine, was tasked to make this journey recently. Flying from O.R. Tambo International Airport, Kayleigh landed in Accra, Ghana, where she caught a connecting flight into Tokaradi. From there, Laila Affo Souleymane picked up Kayleigh to begin a 3-hour drive to Tarkwa. Laila is from our Master Distributor, ACT-ICT, who is based in Ghana. ACT-ICT played an important role in facilitating the relationship between UMaT and MICROMINE Africa.

Once Kayleigh arrived at UMaT, she assisted in making sure the network license was set up correctly on the server within the institution and, ensuring that the correct access was provided for the designated Mining Engineering Department. Kayleigh was greeted by eager professors and lecturers who would make up her class for the next three days. The training began with Kayleigh going over some fundamentals in the Micromine 2018 software, like navigating the user interface and where to attach and load the project data for the training. Kayleigh took the class through the Introduction Training Course, which covers your basic 3D geological modelling within Micromine 2018. The course took just over two days to complete, and with just more than half a day left, Kayleigh decided to showcase the rest of Micromine 2018 functionalities, from the different modelling modules, resource estimation, and then onto the more complex mining modules like pit optimization and mining.

During the training, the University brought in their media teams to document the event as they saw real value in the solutions MICROMINE Africa supplied and were proud to become a part of the MICROMINE family. With the training completed, Kayleigh and Laila took the 3-hour drive back to Tokaradi after which both took their respective flights home. MICROMINE Africa and MICROMINE globally believes in the value gained by providing academic institutions with our software solutions. Not only will it help these institutions deliver better courses to their students, but it also prepares students for the working environment, where before they had no access to the software they will be using once they begin their careers.
